Safe and Well visits

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s home safety checks are changing. Now, as well as fire safety advice, staff will also discuss health and crime prevention with residents as part of new Safe and Well visits.

It is hoped the success of GMFRS’ fire prevention work can be replicated in areas of health and crime, taking pressures off partner organisations and using its expertise and access to over 60,000 homes a year to make people safer and healthier. Those most likely to suffer with health issues are also those at highest risk of fires and they tend to be vulnerable people.

The first roll-out of Safe and Well visits began in November and centre on ‘winter pressures’ and specific issues around warm homes, social isolation, falls and flu inoculations. This work is being carried out in conjunction with a Public Health England initiative and GMFRS is one of only three services nationally to be chosen.

The visits see GMFRS staff look to reduce risks, make positive interventions or direct people to partner agencies in order to improve people’s health, well-being and fire safety.

Throughout a Safe and Well visit our aim is to empower and motivate people to make positive changes to their health, wellbeing and fire safety. By doing this the process should not be limited to merely directing people to other agencies, but will also look to reduce risks during the initial visit where appropriate.

The first part of Safe and Well was rolled out in early November 2015. Here is a video from the launch: video

How do I book a Safe and Well visit?

In Greater Manchester we are committed to reducing fire deaths and injuries by ensuring that every home in the county has a working smoke alarm.  To make certain this happens, we carry out FREE Safe and Well visits, which may include the fitting of FREE smoke alarms.

Along with fitting free smoke alarms, we also give occupiers safety advice so they can keep their homes and families as safe as possible.

When you book a Safe and Well visit, we will visit your home at an allocated time and accompany you around every room in your property with the aim of:

  • Identifying and making you aware of the potential fire risks in your home
  • Making sure you know what to do in order to reduce or prevent these risks
  • Helping you put together an escape plan in case a fire breaks out in the future
  • Ensuring you have a working smoke alarm and if you don't, we may fit a FREE ten year smoke alarm

Booking a visit couldn't be easier. Simply call 0800 555 815.
